Orchestra Taipei Chinese Orchestra


The Taipei Chinese Orchestra (TCO), the first professional Chinese orchestra in Taiwan, has long established a high reputation for its versatility and artistic excellence since its foundation in 1979.
Within the past seasons, the TCO annually touches the lives of close to 100,000 music lovers through more than 50 regular and outreach concerts as well as the Taipei Traditional Arts Festival presented between March and June every year. At the same time, the TCO also bears the responsibility of popularizing art education. Through the Art is Profound art appreciation program, the TCO presents more than 30 concerts for 6th graders all across Taipei City; in addition to more than 24 community concerts entitled Bringing Arts to the Alleys. The TCO also plays the role of cultural ambassador for Taipei and has performed in over 20 nations in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
Since renowned composer Yiu-Kwong Chung´s appointment as General Director and renowned conductor En Shao´s appointment as Music Director in 2007, the TCO has experienced an era of unprecedented artistic growth, with a reputation for innovative and adventurous programming which has broadened the definition of “Traditional Chinese Music”. A distinguished roster of international guest artists TCO has collaborated includes Evelyn Glennie, Mischa Maisky, Julian Lloyd Webber, Anssi Karttunen, Claude Delangle, Christian Lindberg, Sharon Bezaly, and Kronos Quartet; as well as traditional Chinese music masters such as Huifen Min, Pak-yung Siu, Guotong Wang, Liangxing Tang, Yi Gong, Xiangting Li, Wu Man, Fei Song, Jiemin Yan, Ya Dai, Wei Wu, to name only a few.
The outstanding performance of the TCO in recent years has attracted international recognition. In April 2009, the Swedish BIS Records started worldwide distribution of its 2008 recording of the TCO’s collaboration with world-renowned flutist Sharon Bezaly, Whirling Dance, which garnered the “Jury Award” and the “Best Traditional Music Album Award” at Taiwan’s 2010 Golden Melody Awards. From 2009 to 2010, the TCO had three more BIS CD productions. In May 2012, BIS will release a new recording of the TCO and Evelyn Glennie performing contemporary pieces written for her and Chinese instruments.
Over the past thirty years, the TCO has steadily evolved into a world-renown organization that is committed to presenting and developing traditional Chinese music at its highest level. Most recently, the TCO successfully completed their first US tour in 2011 with pipa virtuoso Wu Man. For years to come, the TCO hopes to continue its tradition of excellence, fostering the world-wide propagation of outstanding Chinese music and artistic development of promising traditional Chinese music musicians through outstanding music and quality education programs.
